Belligerence between countries where there was once warmth squanders the achievements of past heroes and needlessly inflames the entire Middle East and beyond.
“If the United States becomes further embroiled in this war — among other consequences — it could well destroy the presidency of Donald Trump and all that he and the MAGA movement have tried to achieve, including its domestic reforms (much as the Vietnam War did to another presidency that had prioritized its domestic agenda, that of Lyndon Johnson).”
Poor Die-hard MAGAs! Desperate to continue their merry times by just fixing existential problems just by a brief jaunt to the polling station. Absolutely anything to NOT roll up their own sleeves to and do the heavy moral lifting called for.
Hey, anybody have Die-hard MAGAs turn the now trending going belligerent on you when you bring this up? Share below in replies.
My comeback, try it: I paste on the biggest smile and fist bump them these onery belligerents simply stating lovingly, “my dear Die-hard MAGA “! ;-) :-)
It's funny how two people can look at the same situation and see it very differently. I'm no historian or political analyst, but I remember Persian tourist-promotional videos of the late 'sixties and early 'seventies. Iran was depicted as a very modern nation - and becoming more so all the time. Men walking the streets in normal attire, yutes dancing in clubs, women on the beach in bikinis. Commerce everywhere.
Then came the Islamic Revolution. Now morality police roam the streets, beating random women with complete impunity. Women walking about - but not without a male escort - attired, as Nigel Farage would say, looking like letterboxes. Oppression on an industrial scale the norm.
And that's just the local problem. In the last 45 years Iran has spent its time threatening the whole region - and soon, if they get The Bomb, the whole world. Promoting the Islamic Cult Of Death: death to Israel, death to the Great Satan, worshipping death to its own "martyrs."
No, this is an historic moment - led by a historic prime minister and historic president. Nobody is more averse to conflict than I, but this is the opportunity of a lifetime to rid the world of an evil like no other. Let us just hope when it's done - and I believe it will be - that the fine, normal Iranian people are able to drag that nation from the '600s back into the present.
"women in bikinis" aka underwear. @fathermarkhodges explains the moral abomination linked below.
All the world's problems are rooted in total loss of morality principles. How about we all address the root problem?
All of us have many same shared concerns, but the lack of a true moral foundation prevents unity - historically always the cause of collapse of nations/empires/civilizations.
It seems to be emerging that Iran is not a pariah in the least, despite the West's best efforts. Most of the world seems to be siding with Iran, especially in the global South, and Israel has become the outcast.
Good heavens, how do you know who's telling the truth? Israel says Hamas puts babies in ovens, Hamas says no it's Israel that puts babies in ovens. It's something similar with Israel vs. Iran now.
Stephen - I have followed your writing for a very long time, starting with my first divorce. I don't think I ended up as badly as you did, but it did attract me to your writing.
However on the current topic, I think one of us needs to get out more. A lot more.
I have another comment block at this link. It's obvious that the West/USA is the biggest pariah here.
Additionally, the loss of religious morality is at the root. FrMarkHodges piece on modest dress is included in my prior comment. Despite the immorality of bikinis, are you still of the opinion that bikinis in the Shah's Iran was moral?
Given the excellent piece on immorality of bikini's, are you unchanged in your position on judging a society by acceptance bikini's? Doesn't that in itself point to a pagan culture? Extending acceptance of bikinis into a culture in countless other areas - what conclusions can one draw about the morality of that culture?
Keep in mind historically, all cultures that lost religious morality, 💯% perished.
If a culture winds itself around the stump on the "immorality of bikinis," while simultaneously burying women up to their chests in dirt and beating them to death with stones, then it SHOULDN'T survive. More bunker-busters, Mr. President! We've identified the world's nidus of evil. Over and out.
For how many years has Iran led the world in funding, promoting, and assisting in the killing of non-combatants? Iran, whether I like it or not, is its government just as the U.S. is it's government. Iran insists that it represents Islam. How much money, how many weapons, how many trained killers has Iran supplied to other Islamic states to promote Jihad? How many women have been brutalized, tortured, raped, treated with disgust by Iran? How many children have been butchered with funds and training by Iran? It is time for Iran to either join the civilized world or perish. We most likely assisted in the development of the power of the Mullahs, so it is fitting that we assist in their demise and the demise of their regime.

I know you mean well, but to my eye this is exactly the type of thinking that has made Iran the world's pariah.

No different than the CIA s color revolutions, regime change, assassinations going back ~80 years.
Kettle calling the pot black?
How about the whole world returns to traditional moral principles??
Thank you for the insightful and touching reminder of the civilizational parallels.
